Google Classroom - Invites coming out early June

As everyone knows, Google announced a new (core!) service coming to everyone in September called Google Classroom. They didn't give too many details but showed a screenshot of what looks to be a student's Dashboard and provided a video.

From: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2014/05/previewing-new-classroom.html

From what I read it sounds like a teacher will give their students a code or a URL and that's how the teacher's class rosters are created, attaching that student to the teacher (and a class). It looks like it puts all of the student's tools in one easy place, like Docs, assignments, calendars, tasks, etc. I'm pretty sure it will replace Google App Scripts and Add-ons like Doctopus.

Anyways, it sounds like invitations will start to be sent out in early June (per a Google person in a Google Chrome group I'm subscribed to). A small amount will be given out and more will come throughout the months until September when it's out to everyone. Request an invite here. Click the blue request button.

A few interesting things
  • It sounds like Google Classroom will only be viewable in Chrome.
  • It's going to be a CORE service - wow! They never add things to core. Gives us great confidence that this will be around for awhile and supported.
  • What will this do to Moodle, Schoology, Hapara?
The only other post about Google Classroom, besides releases from Google, is this one. It's worth a read!
