A few more wishes..
Put @yourdomain.org on the sign-in screen
It would be cool if students didn't have to type in the @isd271.org part of their username when they logged into Chromebooks--just like you don't have to when you go to the direct URL of your Google Apps for Education page. This setting would only work if you didn't allow any other domains to log into the devices. It's not really a problem but it would just be a lot more convenient and it would seem more "customized".
Remove the ability for users to wipe and restore the machine
This is a must, I think. Students are smart and they'll figure out how to wipe or restore devices pretty quickly. If they do that, the devices will be unenrolled and we won't be able to properly manage the device. More importantly, if people are able to wipe the machine and unenroll the device, that "browse as guest" link you see when you get the log-in page before enrolling will be available and people could use the machine without having an @isd271.org account. This is not good because it could encourage theft. A selling point is telling admin and media folks that the device is basically a brick if it's stolen--right now, that is not completely true. GAFE admins should still be able to wipe and restore the device though.
Don't have the extension pop ups come up every time you log into a new Chromebook
Don't have the select a photo pop up every time..
Each time a user logs into a device for the first time that "select an image" screen comes up along with the "getting started" pages for your Chrome apps and extensions. This is pretty annoying. If you were completely 1:1 this wouldn't be much of an issue but when you're not there yet, users will use multiple devices. I think the user's account should somehow know that the apps and extensions aren't new and not show those windows each time. That would be cool if the user could select an image which follows them around to whatever device they are one (I believe this was a wish I already have documented).
Show the Model number of the Chromebook in the details of the device
It's on the back of the device but it would be handy if this piece of information was also in the dashboard. This seems like something that should already be there.
Ability to set the proxy when a user or device is connected to a certain network
We want to be able to enforce a proxy except for when a user is connected to our district's wifi. For example: We want students to to still go through our filter, just like they would in a computer lab, when they're on our district's network. But when they take the device home we want to have them go through a proxy with filters that are less restrictive than our one at school (but not completely unrestricted). A filter that is between totally open (Comcast) and our more filtered network at school. I received this request from our people working on "access from home" where we still need to be CIPA compliant.
Right now, you're able to enable a proxy but it's an all or nothing thing. You can set it so all users can go through that proxy all the time--we want to use that proxy all of the time except when they're on our networks at school.

Your top 2 listed here are my top 2. We will need to use devices for a variety of scenarios in our district, including testing. Since we need to control devices for testing purposes, restricting the ability to "unenroll" is sorta big . . . And for our K-2 kids, it would be much easier to just type in a username vs the entire email address (ours is really long).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post. Hope your wish list is being considered by the Google EDU folks!
